ART-SMART

Is an Internet virtual gallery, they
can offer many of the same advantages of a
traditional gallery i.e. -

They get the artist's work seen by people
in a different location than their own studio.
They promote artwork to buyers that would not
have the opportunity to see this artist's work.
The artist's work is shown in the company of other
established artists.

Not only does the Internet offer all of this,
it extends it. Unlike a traditional gallery that
is limited by time and space, a virtual gallery remains
open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
And because of worldwide scope of the Internet,
it is just as easy for a collector in Japan to view the
artwork as the person who lives next door.

Perhaps the best thing about a virtual gallery
is that an artist can maintain complete control over
the pricing of their art, and in most cases retain
100% of each sale by paying no commission.

ART-SMART offers the best deal to the artist
as well as the buyer. Artists & buyers be sure
to check out ART-SMART.

STARS COME OUT FOR T.R.U. LOVE

On Monday evening, March 8, stars of Broadway and cabaret will join in
performing at "T.R.U. Love", a benefit for Theater Resources Unlimited
(T.R.U.), a seven-year old nonprofit organization that provides
technical assistance, networking and other support to hundreds of Off-Off
Broadway producers, directors writers and performers.

The event, to be held at 8:00 p.m. at the Jan Hus Playhouse, 351 East
74th Street, will be hosted by the well-known impressionist Tommy Femia
as Judy Garland. Other stars expected to appear include Bryan Batt and
James Bohanek of "The Scarlet Pimpernel"; singer Larry French; Jeanne
Lehman of "The Sound of Music"; Norman Lewis of "Side Show" and "Captains
Courageous"; and David Sabella of "Chicago." Also scheduled to perform,
subject to availability, are special guest stars Douglas Sills of "The
Scarlet Pimpernel" and Kristin Chenowith of "You're a Good Man, Charlie
Brown!"

Rounding out the program will be cabaret stars Annie Hughes, Barbara Lea
and Vickie Phillips along with T.R.U. member performers Suzanna Bowling,
Dottie Burman, Lisa Gold, Mary Barto, Marcia Iris Feldman and others. The
evening will also feature original songs by T.R.U. members Carolyn
Albert, Norman Beim, Beth Blatt, Dottie Burman, Cheryl Davis, Ned
Ginsberg, Gary Hughes, Eben Keyes, Amy Merlino, Bob Ost, Mae Richard,
Sherry Paige, Chuck Sachs, Mark Weiser and their collaborators. Musical
direction will be by Paul Johnson and Michael Dion.

"The purpose of the benefit is to provide funding for our New Musicals
Concert Series, Play Reading Series and other future T.R.U. cooperative
producing efforts," said Robert Ost, T.R.U. founder and president. "But
just as important," Ost said, "is the opportunity for our membership,
producers, actors, directors and writers, to mingle with the audience in
a relaxed atmosphere. Audiences are just as much a part of theatre as
performers, and this will give us all a chance to get to know one
another."

Tickets are $40.00 in advance or $50.00 at the door and include a buffet
starting an hour before the performance. For reservations and information
call 212-714-7628.

HAPPENNINGS

FOOTBALL WIDOWS LUNCHEON

I had the fun fortune to attend the annual
FOOTBALL WIDOWS LUNCHEON hosted by the fab
CIAO EUROPA in the Warwick Hotel.
I am of the opinion that spectator sports
has been the enemy of many a relationship.

The menu was the greatest, Penne Vodka,
Insalata Organica, Pollo Inferno Alle
Erbe E Limone, and Tiramiso Cake. The
champage flowed. We all enjoyed the
afternoon. Later that night my phone
rang off the hook, it seems most of
New York saw our celebration on the
many TV stations who filmed our merriment.

CD PARTY AT TATOU

I was one of the fortunates who were
invited to the Party to celebrate the
CD release of JUST BABY'N ME & LEE
at Tatou.

Juggy Murray & Sue Records hosted the
bash. BABY WASHINGTON performed some
selections from the new CD. It is a
winner.

It was so crowded it was hard to see who
was there. I did manage to visit with the
incomparable singer, MAXINE BROWN. She is
the greatest and has been singing around
the area. Watch for her name & go, you
will be thankful you did.

THE DEEP is in the capable hands of the much
loved Johnny Kouros. THE DEEP is at 231 E.

PHEDRE

Although it's come and gone, the recent BAM
presentation of London's Almeida Theatre Company's
production of Racine's PHEDRE, starring Diana Rigg,
is worth mentioning. Always a glamorous figure,
onstage or in films, Rigg, with great control,
skillfully conveyed the anguish of the Greek queen
who lusted for her stepson, Hippolytus (played with
power and dash by Toby Stephens), with dire results
to all.

In the excellent supporting cast Barbara Jefford
was especially fine. Marvelous production values
--Maria Bjornson designed sets and costumes, the
latter both gorgeous and subtle, the set unusual
and angled, plus an extraordinarily vivid, scary
storm--made this a memorable presentation. Let's
not omit the fine direction by Jonathan Kent
working with the excellent, accessible new
adaptation by the late British Poet laureate
Ted Hughes.

FORBIDDEN BROADWAY CLEANS UP ITS ACT!

Hilarious fun describes FORBIDDEN BROADWAY CLEANS
UP ITS ACT!, the latest in creator Gerard
Alessandrini's series of roasts of Broadway stars
and shows. Just a few who feel the barbs include
Bernadette Peters (the kewpie doll pushing 58).
Jennifer Jason Leigh, the stars of JEKYLL &
HYDE, Irish drama as exhibited in THE BEAUTY
QUEEN OF LEENANE, the excesses of LION KING,
MISS SAIGON, replete with helicopter, LES MIS,
TITANIC, etc.

It's astonishing how effective only four
performances can be: Michael Bartoli, Lori
Hammel, Ellen Margulies, and William Selby
(subbing for regular Edward Staudenmayer at
performance I saw) are all outstanding.

A SIMPLE PLAN

One of the season's most powerful films is
A SIMPLE PLAN. Simply, three men (Bill Paxton,
Billy Bob Thornton, and Brent Briscoe)
stumble upon a small plane downed in the
woods, with a cache of cash: over $4 million.
Figuring what to do with their find becomes
incredibly complicated and ultimately leads
to violence and mayhem.

It's the subtext that makes this film a stunner:
Here is a fascinating study of what greed and
mistrust can do to nice people. Terrific
direction by Sam Raimi and screenplay by
Scott B. Smith, from Smith's novel.

FLICKS FROM LAST SEASON'S FESTIVAL NOW
ENJOYING STRONG RUNS

Several flicks that began at last season's
New York Festival are enjoying strong runs
now: A ken Loach film, MY NAME IS JOE (with
the marvelous Peter Mullan as Joe) tells the
harrowing but winning tale of recovering
alcoholics in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The CELEBRATION is a contemporary Danish
domestic horror story about a patriarch who
may not be all he seems or should be.

GODS AND MONSTERS with the great Ian McKellen
tells the story of aging Hollywood director
James Whale and his hoped-for romance with
the pool boy.

Then there's the zany RUSHMORE, in which a
young man who can't seem to do anything right
somehow succeeds. Bill Murray gives a fine
performance, which already won him plaudits
as Best Supporting Actor from several critics
orgs.
PHOTOS: http://www.Jordanaco.com/barth.html
Or click here:

John Boorman's film THE GENERAL, out of Ireland,
intensely tells the story of master true-life
criminal, Martin Cahill, who equally despised
the Church, the state, the IRA and the police.
That lists a good many enemies, so ultimately
he was done in, but not before a spectacular
ride. Brilliantly played by Brendan Gleeson in
the title role.

As always, the Film Society of Lincoln Center
offers an exciting mix of foreign and domestic
films (call 212 875-5600):
as does MoMa (212 709-9480)
